Replacement of the Entenfang Railway Junction in Karlsruhe

This major project involved the complete refurbishment of the infrastructure at one of the key railway junctions in Karlsruhe’s network. The project presented a particular challenge due to the coexistence of different track systems and the extensive works required on the existing infrastructure.
As part of the project, 20 new track components (16 turnouts and 4 crossings) and a complete renewal of the electrical system were installed, upgrading and securing the junction for the long term. Several track sections on the junction’s branches, station platforms and road surfaces were also renewed in parallel.

Extensive earthworks and civil engineering works were carried out before the track installation. Three different track systems were then installed and connected: conventional ballasted track with Vignole rails, Rheda City concrete slab track with grooved rails, and Stelcon slab track for the level crossing at the southern ring road.
The combination of these different systems required precise planning and close coordination of the various construction phases to ensure the continued operation of all modes of transport at this strategic junction.

Our role
TTK was commissioned to provide transport infrastructure planning services from the feasibility study through to the design phase, as well as to prepare the construction tender documents and evaluate the bids. TTK’s expertise made it possible to develop technically optimised and economically viable solutions for the renewal of the existing infrastructure, while ensuring smooth and successful management of the construction phase.
