Operations Utrecht Light Rail

Client: BRU (Bestuur Regio Utrecht)
Partner: Mott MacDonald NL
End: 2014

In May 2011 TTK, together with Mott MacDonald Netherlands, entered a longterm framework agreement with Bestuur Regio Utrecht (BRU). The focus lies on assistance in all technical questions arising during the foreseen extension of their light rail network.

Utrecht today has a light rail system, the Sneltram, operated with SIG-high floor vehicles. Within the framework of the extension towards the Uithof-University and the ensuing change to lowfloor vehicles in the future TTK was asked to set up an operational model for which the software OpenTrack is used.

The following questions are to be answered:

  • Run times for the development stages of the network up to a 3-minute headway on the Uithof line;
  • Number of vehicles necessary for the individual development stages of the network;
  • Operational stability of the interchange at the main station where a new terminal is erected with tram and bus operating in closest proximity;
  • Operational stability and resilience of the network;
  • Effects generated by mixing dedicated bus and tram lanes;
  • Impacts of high demand at peak times on run times and operational stability.
